Strength Training for Women: Myths and a Starter Plan

Why lifting weights is great for women, which myths to ignore, and a simple plan to start.

Quick guide: Strength Training for Women: Myths and a Starter Plan

Lifting weights is one of the best things most women can do for their health. It builds strength, supports bone density and makes everyday tasks easier.

Myth 1: Lifting will make me bulky

Building large amounts of muscle takes years of heavy training and a calorie surplus. Most women who lift see firmer, stronger muscles, not sudden bulk, because women have much lower testosterone levels than men.

Myth 2: Cardio is better for fat loss

Cardio burns calories while you do it. Strength training builds muscle that supports your metabolism and keeps your shape while you lose weight. The best plan usually includes both.

Myth 3: Light weights are enough

Very light weights will not challenge your muscles after the first few weeks. Choose a weight that makes the last two reps of each set hard, with good form.

A starter plan

Train three days a week with a full body workout.

Tips for progress

If you are pregnant, postpartum or have a medical condition, speak with your doctor before changing your exercise routine.
